SDCEA supports the implementation of the WEATHER Project (Warning system for Extreme weather events, Awareness Technology for Healthcare, Equitable delivery, and Resilience), a multi-institutional initiative led by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).
The project aims to reduce the health impacts of extreme weather events, particularly flooding, by developing community-informed Early Warning Systems in vulnerable areas of eThekwini and Ugu Districts, including Merebank, Isipingo, uMnini, and uMzumbe—communities severely affected by the April 2022 floods. Through collaboration between universities and community organisations, including SDCEA, the project integrates climate science, public health, and local knowledge to strengthen preparedness, protect healthcare delivery, and build long-term resilience.
