SOUTH DURBAN COMMUNITY Pickets and Mobilises against Eskom February 2010
The SDCEA together with Climate Justice KZN will be hosting a picket at the ESKOM offices on the 16th February 2010 starting at 09.00am .The picket is aimed at putting pressure on NERSA to revoke the ESKOM application and send ESKOM back to the drawing board to investigate alternatives and relook at their tariffs. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa sub committee meets to deliberate on this application by ESKOM the 17th February 2010 in Gauteng.
The SDCEA and its affiliates are hosting several public meetings to bring to the attention of the public that ESKOM has made application to the National Energy Regulator South Africa to increase its ELECTRICITY TARIFF’S BY 35% for 2010 /2011 to 2012. Eskom is South Africa’s biggest emitter of the greenhouse gases that cause climate change, and wants to continue increasing their emissions by expanding their coal fired power stations.

The communities of South Durban and other parts will no longer sit idle while its fundamental rights are compromised. Like other communities, we have rights to decent housing, redevelopment, affordable electricity rates, ownership of long rented and paid for units, affordable rent, proper recreational facilities, a pollution free environment and a right to be listened to when we voice our views.
