Desmond D’Sa was the chairperson of SDCEA from its inception in 1996 until July of 2008. He has been involved in SDCEA from its onset, having worked in the chemical industry and understanding the field from a wide variety of perspectives before joining SDCEA. After stepping down as chair of the organization, he remains involved as the Office Coordinator and will continue to do what he does best- mobilizer and galvanize people around environmental and human rights issues.

He has received several awards for his work including:

  • 'Too Little, Too Late' award presented by the Centre for the Creative Arts Received Several Award
  • Diakonia Human Rights Award for his selfless and tireless commitment and contribution to environmental justice and human rights
  • The Goldman Environmental Prize recipient in May 2014
  • An Honorary Doctorate from the Durban University of Technology on 2 September 2015
